Command Structure

The Fray
has a formal military command structure that applies both on and off the field of battle. The Fray also incorporates several noncombat positions for functions off the battlefield. Combat officers include Heahthegen, Fyrdwise, Hlaford, and the Dryhten. Noncombat officers are called Hammers.

The Dryhten is the overall commander of the entire Fray. Below the Dryhten are the Hlafords, commanders of the Fray within a given kingdom. Next is the Fyrdwise, in command of a portion of the Fray within a Kingdom. In closest proximity to the troops and leading by example are the Heahthegens, given command of some smaller contingent of the Fray within their Kingdom.

Hammers each have a function to perform. In the performance of their function, they outrank even their Hlaford (nobody outranks the Dryhten). When not performing their job, they are exactly the same as every other Frayman. This fact is true of the combat officers, as well, although their job is much greater in scope. Essentially, all Fraymen are equal.
