DOUGLAS
COUNTY HERALD
March 2, 1899
W. B. Matthews who was sent to the penitentiary for
15 years at the
last term of the circuit court of this county has been granted a new
trial by the supreme court. Deputy Marshall Sallee, of Jefferson
City
brought Mr. Matthews back to Ava last Friday and turned him over to
Sheriff Roper. Matthews immediately went to work getting up a
bond,
which, on last Monday was approved by Judge Evans, and he is now a free
man again awaiting a new trial. The supreme court reversed some
of the
rulings of Judge Evans in the trial of the case and remanded it back to
Douglas county for a new trial. It will come up for trial at the
March
term of the circuit court.
